Meet Kelsey Highsted – 2022 BC Summer Games Para-Equestrian Team Member

We would like to introduce to you BCTRA member Kelsey Highsted one of this year’s para-equestrian participants in the 2022 BC Summer Games in Prince George, BC – July 21-24, 2022.

How long have you been riding?

I have been riding since I was 5 years old. It all started when a friend’s daughter let me sit on her pony… the rest is history!

How and where did you get involved?

With having cerebral palsy my parents saw horseback riding as a form of therapy and I started on lead line at age five. I rode at a local hunter jumper barn for 20-plus years before I made the move to Manestream Equestrian four years ago to continue my adventure with para-dressage after switching to dressage eight years ago.

Are you associated with one of our member centers?

I am not associated with my local Victoria Therapeutic Ridding Centre but I have been lucky to attend some events and shows there. However, having the opportunity to ride with Manestream which focuses on para-equestrian has been a great experience.

What are you most looking forward to at the Summer Games?

This will be my second opportunity to participate in the BC Summer Games and I am excited to show with other para riders and meet new people. The games also give the rider a chance to show in a new location that would normally not be an option which is exciting!

Tell us about your horse.

Sweet Pea is an 18-year-old German Riding Pony. She is bay and 14.3 hands high. Pea is used in the para program with Manestream as well as enjoys working equitation and hitting the trails! She is a real sweetheart and always gives her all!

Who is on your team?

I am so lucky to have a wonderful team! My team includes my parents, Kim and Stella, Holly, and the Manestream crew. Getting to the games would not be possible without these wonderful people!!
