Meet Kelsey Highsted – BC Summer Games Para-Equestrian

We would like to introduce to you Kelsey Highsted from Sidney, BC one of this year’s para-equestrian participants in the 2018 BC Summer Games in Cowichan, BC July 19-22.

How long have you been riding?

I have been riding for just over 20 years, I started at age five and haven’t stopped since.

How and where did you get involved?

I was introduced to riding at a young age by a family friend whose daughter let me sit on her horse at age four and I was hooked. I started riding for fun but also for physical therapy.  At age six I started at Ambleside Farm where I rode weekly and have done since then!

Are you associated with one of our member centres?

No, I’m not associated with the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association but have been to a couple of different para events there, including a classification clinic and riding demo.

What are you most looking forward to at the Summer Games?

I’m most looking forward to meeting new people, I am really excited to show with other para-riders as I don’t get that opportunity often. It is also offering an opportunity to learn and show somewhere new on the Island.

Tell us about your horse:

Zipper is an 18-year-old 15’1 hh bay Morgan. His show name is Captain Morgan. He is an easy-going all-around mount who loves his job! (most of the time). He does a bit of everything, hunters, jumpers and dressage.  An interesting fact about him is that I am the first para rider to ride him, so we have been learning together about the para world and dressage. Zipper is a bit of a comedian, he likes to pull zippers on jackets and vests which is fitting due to his name.  He loves attention and really enjoys getting scratches. He is a wonderful, handsome gentleman with a bit of a cheeky streak but that’s why he is so loveable!

Introduce us to your team:

I am so lucky to have a wonderful team. My team includes my wonderful coaches, my barn family, and my parents! I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without them!
