Para Dressage Clinics with Clive Milkins
In partnership with HORSE COUNCIL BC (HCBC) and EQUESTRIAN CANADA (EC), we the BC Therapeutic Riding Association (BCTRA) received the funding grant from the CANADIAN PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE (CPC) to host coaching clinics with Clive Milkins.
The Para-Dressage Coaching Clinics will be in March 2023 with four locations across BC: The Lower Mainland (Langley, BC), Vancouver Island (Victoria, Duncan), and the Interior (Kamloops, BC).
Clive Milkins is a graduate of the United Kingdom (UK) Sport Elite Coaching Program, a Fellow of Riding for the Disabled, and a Level 3 UK Certified Coach, EC Licensed Coach, and NCCP Certified High Performance Dressage Coach, Milkins also has a long list of qualifications in equine business management, horse management and teaching.
Milkins has been involved in Para-Dressage for over 30 years, training horses and coaching athletes to the highest levels of success on the world stage. Most notably as coach of internationally renowned Para-Dressage athlete, Sophie Christiansen of Great Britain who earned six Paralympic, four FEI World Equestrian Games and eight European Championship titles.
Milkins has a strong passion for developing coaching systems and programs to grow the sport and has travelled extensively, coaching in Europe, North and South America, South Africa and Asia. He has also worked closely with athletes of all abilities. In addition, Milkins has extensive experience developing coaches with providing guidance and mentorship on developing their students to International Level.
These clinics are designed to educate coaches on topics associated with coaching riders with a disability and to encourage Equestrian Canada certified coaches to include riders with disabilities in their training and competitive programs.
These clinics will provide an opportunity to connect emerging coaches and athletes while covering the principles of Para-Dressage coaching including guiding the improvement processes and technical skill acquisition towards an effective development of coaching activities. It will prepare athletes from grassroots education to international competitions. Each clinic will include rider demonstrations with simulated lessons, where coaches will be encouraged to engage and expand their knowledge in dressage.
“Para” comes from the term “parallel” (not paraplegic) and is designed for the independent athlete with permanent, physical and visual disabilities seeking a competitive track.
It is anticipated that those who attend will be able to use knowledge acquired from these clinics to introduce more people with disabilities to equestrian sport and to identify and encourage potential Para-Dressage athletes to strive for the podium.
