Many of BCTRA’s members, centres, instructors and coaches, are involved in helping riders with disabilities sharpen their skills to take part in competitions at local, provincial, national and even international events. Dressage, driving, Reining and adapted vaulting are some of the activities recognized by BCTRA. Riders enjoy the freedom that comes with riding, the comradery of their peers and the recognition that comes with the winning. Provincially many riders transition from therapeutic riding programs to competing at HCBC and Bronze level competitions and on to compete at the BC Summer games.
Para-Equestrian
Para-Equestrian is a sport for riders with a disability that has been a Paralympic sport since 1996 and became the 8th FEI discipline in 2006. It is widely practiced throughout the world. Riders are assigned a “profile that fits into a classification grade from 1-5 based on their functional ability. Based on their profile, the use of compensatory aids appropriate for their grade is allowed. Dressage, Reining and driving are forms of para-equestrian activities that individuals can compete in as well as video competitions hosted by Equestrian Canada.
BC Summer Games
Every two years, para-equestrian athletes aged 13-30 years old get the opportunity to compete in this provincial event. Competitors do not need to be classified Those who are already classified may also compete and must be competing in their grade according to their functional classification. Requirements for qualifying for the BC Summer Games is in the Technical package, available here >>
Adapted Equestrian Vaulting
Riders with disabilities are also embracing adapted equestrian vaulting with programs springing up at therapeutic riding centers across the province. Equestrian vaulting is a gymnastic-type performance on a moving horse set to music, blending the traditions of dance and gymnastics with equestrian sport and providing many of the same benefits as therapeutic riding. Unlike traditional, independent equestrian disciplines, vaulters work in teams, assisting each other with maneuvers and creating a seamless multi-player aesthetic. Instruction is provided by certified coaches. In British Columbia, these instructors are accredited under Equestrian Vaulting Association of BC.
